• . • It was that of Inez de Castro — -I " the Queen crowned after death " — who was murdered in the 14th century by three assassins. The lady was the wife of a Portuguese J* Crown Prince, and she was mnr« dered by order of the King— her c father-in-law. The Prince never spoke to his father again, and when the old roan died the remains of Inez w^re lifted from the grave, ■ placed on a magnificent throne, and ] crowned Queen of Portugal. The ] olergy, the nobility, and the people did homage to her corpse, and kissed / the bones of her bands. There sat the dead Queen, with her yellow hair hanging like a veil round her ghastly form. One flesbless hind held the sc«ptre, and the other the •orb of royalty;
