Fire.
This morning, the public house kept by Mr Hunter had a very narrow escape from bejng consnmea by fire« About noon, Mr Wearing, who was papering a room upstairs, ran down and told the landlord that some part of the premises were on fire, as smoke was^comißg into the room. A run upstairs was made and an axe applied to the Mnjng, and four tins of water emptied down. A move was then niade downstairs, bnt nothing could be seen, but, 'after much searching, a small hole was found in the 1 lining ; near the back kitchen window, and on the weather boards being forced, off, they were found charred inside as was also the • stud supporting the 'Window. Of course this was speedily extinguished. Upon enquiry being made; it was found that one of the maids had been blowing up her charcoal iron on the window sill and a spark must have found its way down this hole. The building is insured ,in the New Zealand Insurance' Co. j s JM which Mr Gibson is the local agent.
