Arrival of the Maritana.

» The Auckland yacht Maritana arrived safely in Wellington harbour at daylight on Friday morning, after a rough and unpleasant voyage down the coast says the If. Z. Times. In appearance the little vessel is somewhat like the Mascotte, but painted black like the Pastime, and looks as if she would" be a good match for the winner of the first class yatoh race of Thursday. The Maritana left Waitemata on Monday the 12th inst. and had to run for shelter under Mania Peninsular, were she anchored for sixtytwo hours. . She left there with the weather looking more setttled, but rm #«M)htafif O«pe tfttrnaflwn «

heavy weste.ly breeze was encountered. She hove to 15 miles off the land, with the sea far too high to be comfortable. Bags of oil were hung from the bow sprit guys which prevented the heavy seas from breaking top close. The ballance-reefed mainsail was split, and the staysail blown to ribbons. Next morning the sea moderated a bit and she stood on her course, but towards middayiihfe wind increased again, and by 2 o'clock such a heavy " buster" came up from the South that the skipper deemed it prudent to run for shelter under Castle Pojnt. On Tuesday another start' was made, her racing sails being broughtinto service in place of these blbwn away and damaged. A fair wind was experi* enced until Hearing Cape Palliser, when a heavy nor' -west gale came on. She ultimately arrived as stated above. The crew, as may be imagined have had a very rough time of it, and for the last 48 hours have scarcely had any sleep and are all thoroughly done up. Towards the afternoon additional ballast was put on board and other work done in readiness for to-day's race.
