Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JANUARY 24, 1891.

Owing to the regrettable bathing fatality the meeting called, to elect office bearers for All Saints Church, for last night, fell through. It is probable another date next month will be fixed* We hear that the Committee of the Racing Club are likely to hold a hack meeting before long

The very many friends of Mr and Mrs Carter will read with much regret the notice of the death of Mr and Airs Ashby's eldest daughter. The child went off very suddenly, having only shown signs of illness the afternoon previous to her death on Thursday morning. A doctor is very much needed for the assurance of parents The Bum of £8000 was put through the totalisator at Wellington. After an illness of some duration, Mr William Shearer, well known in this district for some years, passed away on Tuesday evening. The funeral took place at the cemetery on Thursday. A servant girl is advertised for. The handicapping for our races was too good, and our course too perfect, to allow of any sensational dividends, the highest having been only £3 13s. In Wellington | however the conditions being reversed, seven individuals obtained a dividend of £131 5s each in a hack race for £30. The winning horse Moonee must have been a dark " horse " indeed. The locust plague has reached Ballavat, and is ravaging the fine Botanical Gardens belonging to that city. To show the good fortune of the Cltib we may mention that yesterday morning it rained and threatened rain all day, yet the race day was one of the very best that could have been desired. When a man has spent a quarter of a century in the public service and during that time has discharged his duties faithfully and well, the fact is worthy of note says the Manawatu Times. It is still more noteworthy when the officer who has completed this term has never during the whole period taken a single holiday, though the regulations allow him these. We have such a man in our midst, who enjoys the esteem and respect of all. We allude to Mr G. Innes, postmaster at Palmerston, who, at the end of next month will have -oompleted a period of twentyfive years service in the Department. His devotion to his' work is well-known to Palmerstonians, and he has certainly filled a long period with faithful and zealous service. Mr Hunt and two other settlers in the Awahou-Pohangina Small Farm Settlement waited on the Eiwitea Road Board on Saturday and presented a petition asking that certain roads in the block be opened up. Mr Hunt stated that several families were living on their sections and were unable to get in or out. Warden Haythorne pointed out that the settlers were in fault in not carrying the loan proposals when the opportunity presented. Mr Hunt said at the time the proposals were before them there were very few of the settlers living on the land. It was resolved on the motion of Warden Lucas, seconded by Warden Fowles, That the thirds accruing from sections 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 28, 35, 31 32, 33, 34, Foxton Special Settlement, be expended in front of section 24, as it is of the most importance to the settlers on these sections. Joshua Mathers, sentenced to three months' imprisonment for larceny on Tuesday at Palmerston was taken through to Wangauui on Wednesday. A gentleman from this district who ha just returned from a fortnights tour among the sheep owners in Hawke's Bay, tells the Times that with the exception of one or two instances thatre is plenty of feed, although it is dry. The stock are in splendid condition, and owners say they will freeze all their fat stock in preference to selling their ewes at reduced prices. Our informant considers that with a day's rain now and then they will be able to hold out for three months, even with the stock they have. The Ca3h C earing Sale of Jobberns & Co.
