PARLIAMENT.

» HOUSE OF REPBESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.80. p.m. and the Clerk of the House took the chair and called on the members to elect a Speakej. Mr A. Saunders proposed Mr Rolleston and Mr J. W. Thomson seconded. Mr Seddon proposed Major Steward and Mr O'Connor seconded. On being put to the vote 29 voted for Mr Rolleston and 86 against him, therefore Major Steward was elected on the voices. The Minister for Public Works intimated that the Government had resigned, and the Hon. Mr Ballance announced that the Governor had asked him to form a Ministry. The House adjourned to Tuesday.
