The St James's Gazette.
We are not prepared to state that the St James's Gazette is in error in making the statement that ' General ' Booth advanced £5000 to assist Mr Stead to buy out his partner in the Review of Reviews, but until further particulars are to hand, we should recommend the assertion to be accepted with more than the usual grain of salt. No love is lost between the paper making the statement, and the Pall Mall Gazette with which Mr Stead was. formerly connected. In 1880 Mr Frederick Greenwood severed his connection with the Pvll ■Mall' Gazette, and started in direct opposition to it theSt James's Gazette. All went smooth untill 1888 when, owing to disagreements with the owner, Mr Greenwood announced that: he • quitted the office "under stress of the strongest compulsion.*' The Gazette did not refrain from remarking on the position, and said that the former proprietor, had lost nearly J690,000 during the time Mr Greenwood was editor, Mr Stead was at this time editor of the Gazette, and remarking on the fortunes of the rival paper said of Mr Greenwood, " In taking leave of him in this connection, we cordially congratulate him on the determination and pluck with which he has . fought his long up-uilljb'attle in a cause fore-doomed to failure. ' ' The italics are ours, and the owner, of the property " foredoomed to failure " would not be likely to object to get at some particulars about this prophet oi evil. Therefore until all information is to hand let us stay our judgement.
