Foxton Borough Council.

The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held at the Library last night at 7 p.m. Present— The Mayor, (T. Wilson Esq), Crs. Jonson, Austin, Nve and T. P. Williams. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence. From Speirs and McKee 'applying for flaxmill site. From J. Hillary complaining of charge for lease. The Poundkeepers report and the Ranger's report, for the quarter, were laid on the table. It was proposed by Cr Williams and seconded by Cr A. Jonson, That an allowance be made to Mr Hillary of £8 for lease of ferry and the said lease become the property ot the Council. — Carried. It was proposed by Cr Austin and seconded by Cr Jonson, That the Mayor and Cr Williams affix 'the seal of the Council to the ferry lease. — Carried. ! Report to be brought in at next meeting. Cr Williams thought the question should not be further dealt with. The resolution was withdrawn by consent of the Council. It was proposed by Cr Nye and seconded by Cr Austin, That tenders be called for removing the old Avenue bridge and building a new culvert in its place according to plan and specifications. — Carried. It was proposed by Or Nye and seconded by Cr Cr Austin, That Mr Gower's gate be shifted to improve the approaches on the north bank of the river, the Council bear ahe cost of shifting said gate. — Carried. It was proposed by Cr Nye and seconded by Cr Austin. That 80 yards of coarse gravel be supplied to make up the approaches of the Wirikino ferry on both sides of the river, also that Mr Hillary's offer be accepted to paint the hand rails and all upper works of the new punt in three ooats of best white lead and linseed oil, for the sum of two pounds. — Carried. It was proposed by Cr Jonson and seconded by Or Austin, That Messrs Nye and Williams be appointed a public works committee. — Carried. It was proposed by Cr William and seconded by Cr Jonson, That the Mayor be authorised to sign cheques on behalf of the Council. — Carried. It was proposed by the Mayor and seconded by Cr Williams, That leave of absence be granted to the Clerk for 14 days from the 18th Jan. — Carried. It was proposed by Cr Jonson and seconded by Cr Austin, That Messrs Nye, Austin and Williams be appointed to receive and accept tenders for gravelling and culvert and meet at % p.m. 19th inst.v— Carried, 1 The following tenders for collect' ing the dog tax were opened, — P. Guerin lOd per head, G, Smith 8d per head. It was proposed by Cr Williams and seconded by Cr Austin, That G. Smith's tender for collect? ing the dog tax be accepted. — Carried. It was proposed by Cr .Williams and second by Cr Jonson, That the dog tax for 1891 be 2/6 per dog. As an amendment it was proposed by the Mayor and seconded by Cr Austin, That the dog tax for 1891 be 5/- per dog, The Amendment was carried on the voiceß. Tenders for lamp-lighting were opened. G. Smith £2 6s 8d per lamp, total £28 ; John McGill, £80 ; P. Guerin, £29. It was proposed by Cr Williams and seconded by Cr Austin, That P. Guerin's tender for lamp-lighting be accepted. — Carried . It was proposed by the Mayor and seconded by Cr Williams, That the valuation roll be left in the Council office for inspection. — Carrie d. It was proposed by Cr Nye and seconded [t>y Cr Austin, That the Clerk have a boarded screen erected at the end of the library for the use of the public. — 'Carried. The following accounts were passed for payment : — Sullivan, Pitts and Spring, £7 10s 2d ; Manawatu Herald, £15 16s 6d ; P. Guerin, lamps, repairs, ranging and deposils, £17 18s 3d ; Blake, £5 12s 6d ; T. Gibson, £5 ; R. McLean, 12/6 ; C. Warne, £15 16s ; A. Jonson, £1 16s 6d ; C. Spring (sexton} £5. The Council then adjourned to the 2nd February.
