Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1890. The Government.
It h becoming every day clearer that il' tlu' Atkinson Government is not popular, the Opposition, as represented by Mr l^allance, is more unpopular, and that when Parliament does meet, early in the now year, it will he the present Government reconstructed, that will meet the I [oiise, and retain oHieo. The parties in the House will not he well marked, and probably no Government will he able to show a strong majority. The elections were fought on t ho lines of the question of taxation, and labour versus capital. Labour was badly beaten, and those opposed to the Property Tax failed altogether to show any other system of taxation which would h:in;jf in a similar revenue with the l< <i st ir convenience. I'ntil tins is done we cannot be sur-
prised at members tendering their allowance to the Government, that still adheres to the present system of raising the necessary revenue. AYe do not fear hut that a very satisfactory Government could bo loaned from the Ministerial side, and we J have no doubt l»:-fc that this is what j whl he. The taxpayers should earnestly desire some such amusement as our creditors will be pncitieil, --md i thvi cost of a second session would be n voided.
