Manamatu Herald. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1890.
Mr McLrunuii purchased the short horn bull that took the first prize in his class at the Wellington show. He arrived at the stut ion on Thursday. The bull was bred by Mr Dean of Ricearton. His colour is a very dark rod, a most brown with white ilhuik. He is considered one of the best bulls ever imported into the district. We are sorry to learn that Mr Gower the other day sprained his back, very severe y, whilst lifting a sack of potatoes. He managed to get down yesterday to vote, but is unfitted to look after his farm. We hope to soon hear of his recovery. Mhe plague of locusts is advancing at Albany in a column 12 miles wide and 10 miles "long. The pest is travelling at the rate of 11 miles in 2-1 hours. In another column Messrs Stevens dr Gorton notify the sale by auction of certain valuable Education Reserves. Some rapid slaughtering was 'lone at the Gear Meat Company's worka, Petone, a few days ngo, when ten men in eight boms killed and dressed fifteen hundred sheep and a few days afterwards three men in eight hoars shu •■.;!! it re. l nud dremed 27 bullocks.

Moss, the J'vitirih Kcsident in the Loivey Oi-oiip, regatuing the liquor tiu.de. t c ]'ou, a • .lief who represents Quee n t lakea and lur people, strongly protested n gainst the importing of liquor in Katatonga j ne two other queens, Mare I'oa aud 'inemona, also spoke in that strain. UI- *■ mately it was decided to pass a law pre- \ anting the sale of foreign icjuors in the i roup, and the penalty against the manu- v icture and sale of locally-brewed or , range beer, was confirmed. After Mr loss visits all the islands of the group he * 'ill return to W T el ington to confer with \ lie Government. . L A curious case has arisen at Auckland t pgarding two firemen of the steamer t lariposi named Toomey and Heron. VTien the vessel was in port they were barged at the Police Court with having ' ome from Sydney to Auckland without aving paid their passage money. It j ppears tbey served on the Mariposa from iau Francisco to Sydney, but on arrival at ' lie latter port they were charged with the ] lieft on board. The case was. however, < rithdrawn, a> the oflicers of the steamer < id not wish to remain in Sydney unti. the i latter could be investigated by the Su-n-cmc Court. It was then held that the . ;ien, by their arrest, were constituted 1 eserters from the ship, and certificates to < hat effect were given by the American . Consul at Sydney. The master of the • laiiposa Captain Hayward, declined there- ■ ore to receive the two men, who accord- { ngly stow-Vl themselves away on board the '. teainer. as they wished to get back to San Francisco. They were discovered at sea .nd handed over to the police authorities lere, but the local bench decided that hey could not be considered deserters, as hey did not leave the steamer of their own vill, and as the charge against them wai lot proved, the charge of being stowaways vas therefore dismissed. This decision was indorsed by Mr Conolly. the American L'onsnl at Auckland. Notwithstanding this md notwithstanding also the protests of ,he other fireman on the vessel, Captain [Jaywood refused to allow them on board, lad the Mariposa sailed without them. Mr Jonolly has sent the two men to lodgings it the expense of the United States Government, to await the arrival of the next American vessel. A correspondent of the Dunedin Star ivrites :— Cowley, in ono of his essays says : ■' To what pitiful business did the' noblest Romans submit themselves for the obtaining a praaorship, or the counsellor's dignity. They . . . ran about on foot md in dirt through all the tribes to beg voices (votes); they flattered the poorest artisans, and carried a nomenclator with them to whisper in their ear every man's name lest they should mistake it in their salutations ; they shook the hand . . . Df every popular tradesman ; they stood all flay at every market in the public places to show and ingratiate themselves to the rout ; they emp oyed all their friends to solicit for them." There is something very healthy looking about the returns of railway revenue (says the Post). It will be remembered that in their report to the Parliament the Railway Commissioners estimated the profits for the current year at £10,000 less than those earned last year, the absence of the Exhibition traffic being taken into account. Up to the present stage, however, so far from their being any falling off, the profits now shown on the books of the department arc £10,000 more than thoao accumulated uj) to the corresponding month of last year. A London cablegram states that Mr Holmes, late Manager of the Bank of Madras, at Colombo, has been appointed General Manager of the Bank of NewZealand throughout the colonies. His Fsoellency the Governor arrived at Wanganui on Ttic-.iday afternoon, alighting at Eastown, an^ was escorted by a detachment of the \\lexandra Cavalry to the bridge, where he was received by the Mayor and B.oro-igh Comicillpr.s. He is now anxiously managing all the most important business, and it was with extreme reluctance that he a 1 andoned his intention of visiting the district personally before the election.
