Election Items.

♦ The Manawatu Standard of Saturday says:— A rumonr is current in \ town to-day that Mr Pirani has tele- ; graphed to obtain police protection 1 for his meeting at < ainpbolltown to- \ ni^ht, and the same paper ofyoster- ', day's date s;iys :— " We learn that , Mr Pirani, anticipating a very row.iy ! meeting at Foxton on Wednesday ; evening 1 , has n.^ain applied for polico protection." Tliis is solid irapucl; nee ! \ " A guilty conscience doth make : cowards of us all," as Mr Pirani has

spoken twice hero and hfid most orderly meetings lie had no reason for expecting otherwise. Mr R. S. Abraham , in a letter to the Manawatu Times, correcting Mr Piranrs report of the Sandon meeting, says, that he forgot to mention the questions that were put to him, one being — "Did you vote whilst a member of the Licensing Committee at Palmersto* North in favour of granting licenses to either the Central or Occidental Hotels?" (or words to that effect), the answer Iteing a most unqualified denial of his having done so. Now, Sir, I have the authority of two of his lellow committeemen for stating that Mr Pirani gave both applications his personal support, the voting in the case of C'armody's application for the Central being Pirani, Bush and Wray for, Drew against and that decision was publicly given in open Court. Comment is needless In tho Manawatu Standard Mr Mackie writes to say that Mr Pirani's version of the coffin sit ie not correct ! He further states that " After Mr Pirani's conduct towards me I shall no longer give him my support, and can speak for several of his former supporters in Foxton, and the others can do as they think proper. I have been a good friend to iMr Pirani, but I am done with him from this time forward." "We think his decision a corect one, as he has worked very hard for Mr Pirani and has received more kicks than halfpence.
