Birds and Peas.
— ♦- . Writing of the bird nusiance, a correspondent of tbe G-ardeii, makes the following remarks : -At this time of year many owners of gardeus are ppvplex«d as to how best to preserve the tops of the young peas, for just as they push through the soil they are attacked by sparrows that pick the tops of tho shoots off and grentely arrest v lie growth. Now there there' av- many devices more or ess effectual, such' as cover ing with wire pea-guards, placing thro.ids just over the lines, with or without feathers, &c that, do very well on a small scale, but are qui'e impracticable where there are large breadths to be protectel. When looking over a market garden the other day the owner told me that he always inalces it. a rule directly he sees peas breaking through the soil to draw «, good ridge of toil right over them, us he finds that by the time they push through the second time they have acquired aa much ! additional strength that Hie birds ' cannot injure or obeck them.
