The German Squadron.

.. • _*. • - Ox Monday morning the German Squadron arrived in Wellington harbour consisting of H. I. G. M. ships Leipzig, Sophie, and Alexandrina. The Leipzig, the largest vcfssel of the three, ha 3 a displacement of 3860 t >ns, and her dimensions are : Lenath, 282 ft; beam, 46ft; depth, 20ft Bin. She was launched at Stettin in 1875, and is constructed on the composite principle, iron hull sheathed with wood. She has two funne's, and in ship rigged. She is fitted throughout with the electric light. Her armament consists of 12 guns of 17 oentimetres (6.68 in) calibre, and-8 Nordenfelda and boat gunsot 8.7 centimetres. Her engines are 4800 h.p. nominal, and she can steam 15 knots an hour. The Sophie is a. comp site corvette cruiser, and is barque rigged. Her engines are of 2100 horse power effective and are of the usual compound pattern, surface condensing and direct acting. , Uuder a full head of steam she oan steam 15 knots on a consumption of 40 or 41 tons per day. He armamsnt consists of 10 Krapp gnns, and th^ir oalibre is 15 centimetres; three

smaller guns which are us°d for saluting and other purposes, and six Hotcbk ss guns. She also came* • supply of torpedoes. She is fur. nished with an elecfric search ligh . Her crew numbers 267 men all told. The Alexandrine is a screw corvette, and is the heaviest armed vessel of thp squadron. Her armament comprises 14 guns, 12 bei g 15 centimetre <6in), and two 8 9 centime res (3£in), BLR Kruop cannon, besides one field and four machine guns. - She is built of steel audUron, and cased with wood, and was launched from the Government dockyard at gieji on the 7th February, 1888;; She measures 72 metres in length and 18 |n breadth, and her displacement is "2870 tons. Her engines are on the horizontal compound tandem principal, of 2400 h.p. indicated, and her speed it said to be 14 knots. She has two funnels, and is barque rigged. The vessel is divided into Dine watertight compartments. It is expected that the squardron will remain about a month.
