Public Meeting.

A public meeting of the Burgesses was held at the Public Hall on Tuesday night, to consider tho advisability of providing the town with a water supply. The Mayor took the chair, and opened the proceedings b/ reading the advertisement appearing in the Manawatu Herald. He mentioned that the meeting wag called in accordance with a resolution passed at the last Council meeting. He said that the need of water supply arose from the ordinary place of getting water from the river, having been interfered with by the mills. The Council then considered other sup ! plies. Mr Nye, who had taken a deal of trouble in this matter, thought that the old supply should not be cut off unleii auother is supplied. He is present and wi'l give all further information needed. The scheme is no ne-v one as water is brought from there for the railway. £H« read Mr Nye'a statement from

the report appearing in *;he Mnnawatu Her Id.) heCouuci' believedit tjbe a inatterj which sh ukl be brought before the pub ic. Tuere are the alternatives, leave the inait<-r alone; the next to st p the mil s, wh eh is within the power of the Bun ugh, but he did not suppube they would wi-h to do that ; tbe iv xt scheme is, the artesian, which had beoi his favourite, and the water supply had been held in abeyance waiting for results of other trials ; then the Government made an attempt at Carnarvon, but all at present had failed. The Council then feared that £1000 might have been involved in a trial for an artesian supply. The last alternative is to sink a well along a vein running as Mr Jonson had mentioned. We are hear to discuss the question whether a loan shall be raised to bring in a water supply from the racecourse. As a business man he was assured the scheme wai feasible and could be carried out. Mr Nye said, that he thought Mv Gower had made the matter quite clear about the water supply and he had no more to a^d. He thought that a 6 foot we 1 with windmill and 5000 gallon tank would cost about £125. The water in the tewn was contaminated with the soakage from the closets, and if the town got larger the result would be worse. When the well was Bunk on the racecourse the water could not be kept down. The \rater in the river has never been what is called good, it has been at times veiy biackish. A trial well might only cost £30, and if good, a tank could be built. The depth would be about 25 feel. The water stands in the well at the racecourse, 10 feet deep at the driest part of the summer. Mr Stewart remarked that the proposal did not seem to bo water auppiy. All that is wanted is a pipe laid down the main street from the racecourse. MrThynne suggested that the only difference between Messrs Nye and Stewart's schemes was a tank, and he thought that perhaps the tank was not needod. He would have liked to have seen more preparation for this meeting, such as a plan showing boundaries of rating area, the estimated rate &c. Be hoped however, the scheme would be pro perly tested by a vote, and therefore moved, That a loan be raised to pro* vide a water Bupply a 9 suggested by Mr Nye, but with additions and amendments, on which ; being sec> onded by Mr Furrie whs carried.
