Mr Macdonald scored a win in the Maiden Hat race with Ruahine, full brother to Tonguriro, and Rnapelm. The Woodville Police Station, which has hitherto been under control of the Inspector of Napier, has now hern ;\dded to the Wellington district. The K. Z. The subject is now under consideration. The granting of a bonus would be in accordance with one of the recommendations of the Committee of the House, which investigated these industries last session. General Booth, of the Salvation Army has purchased the site of a brewery in the city, and purposes converting it into a city colony The English bishops and Cardinal Manning approve the scheme. Lord Augustus Loftus is said to be writing a volume of his reminiscences, chiefly concerning his experiences in Australia. Sydney still rings with stories telling against Lord Carrington's predecessor, and it is expected that Lord Augustus, who used to have a pungent pen, will retort in a style to make the New South Wales squirm. John Bertie, of the Pier Hotel Wellington, has been fined £5 and costß ior Sunday trading. At the Wellington Magistrate's Court on Friday morning, John McDermott, one of the strikers, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment on each of three charges for assulting free lab urers, the sentences to be cumulative. The Magistrate, in delivering sentence, said it was manifest that the assault was part of an organis d attack, and it was unfortunate that McDermott was the only one identified. The Court, he said, was determined to deal with cases of this kind in a manner that would tend to stamp them out. Thn work of our Acclimatisation Society, says the Chronirh', is producing good results in the matter of fresh-water fish, an article of which the New Zealand rivers 1 and lakes were rather deficient. The English perch, liberated in several of our Wanganui lakes, have done so well that persons having ponds or lagoons on their property should endeavour to stock them with these fish, which are excellent food. Several very fine ones have lately been hooked in the Virgina water. On Saturday Mr H. Harper caught two very large ones, which were exhibited in Mr I 'rew's window on that evening ; on Monday Mr Field hooked one which he judged to be over 41bs in weight, but it broke his rod and escaped. On Thursday morning however, he caught another weighing 3;Jlb3. It was a female fish in the very pink of condition, being nearly as yellow as a carp. Its dimensions are length. 17j-in : depth, fijin ; thickness, 2jsin. As it seemed full of roe, he took it home alive and liberated it. Messrs Liffiton and Cliavanne alao caught several good n>h there lately.
