A Tale of the Olden Time.

The presence of a noted criminal in town reminds us of a notorious case in which he was mixed up many years ago. The man we refer to was one of two who had left the troops and Major Scully was despatched to arrest the deserterß. He found them about Feilding, and brought them back through Woodville on their way to ftapier. In going through the lonely bush they hatched a plot. A pigeon was sitting on a bough, and they told the Major he could not hit it by a shofc from the pitol. He said he could, and the result of the banter was he fir ed at the bird, and as soon as tho prisoners knew his pistol was empty they seized him and bound him to a tree and stripped him so that he should be exposed to the mosquitoes and unab'e to protect himself. They then went on and told at the fir«t hotel what they had done. Assistance was dispatched to the relief of Major Scully, who had a fearful time of suffering.— Woodville " Examiner"
