THE MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL
The ordinary monthly meeting of this council was held on Tuesday, there being 1 present — Crs Ransom 'Chairman), McLonnan, San on, Saxon, Robinson, Hammond, Mitchell and McKenzie. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the fallowing c irresnomlenoG was re id and considered : — From August Gut, asking that Weir-stieet, from HopkinVline to the Lutheran Church should be formed. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded l>y Cl McLennan and carried, That the Overseer be instructed to form S\ chains of Weir-street in terms of Mr (.rust's letter of October Oth." From four ratepayers, requesting that some necessary repairs should be carried out on Taylur's-'ine. From 0. Bray, C. E., with estimate of the cost of bridge and approaches over the Orona river at j Jones- line at £9GO, and stating that the estimate recently sent in of the cost of the Hupkin's-line bridge included cost of approaches. From the Auditor-General, calling attention to the passing of an Act which had removed the technical objections raised by some local bodies to paying the legal charge for the j official audit of their accounts, and ! requesting payment of £5 13s 4d. ! From S. Marsh, requesting aid in I sending her daughter to the Wellington Hospital. I From H. Hankins stating that MiBrooks had signed the Irarawny ■ lease. | From Secretary to the Wanganui j Hospital Board, with list of persons lin the county indebted to the board. From Thomas Wilson, manager of the Montoa Estate, stating tha terms upon which he would agree to a transfer of roads. The report of the committee appointed to inquire into tho relative merits of Hopkins and Jones line« as sites for a bridge to connect with the roads on the Longburn line, \va= strongly in favour of Hopkins line The following motion, of which notice was given at last meeting was carried. Moved by Cr Ransom, and seconded by Cr Hammond, That Hickford's and Hopkin's lines, with the continuation to the Oroua River, be proclaimed a county road, and to b known in future as the Campbelltown Longburn ro n d. E. Standr-n'a application for a license to slaughter catt c ou section 836, Oroua Bridge was granted. On the motion of Cr Sanson, and seconded by Cr McLennan, tenders were ordered to be ca'led for 88 chains of mad on McDone'l's line. The tender of C. Lumsd^n for claying 40 chains of the Taikorealine, at 88s per chain, was accepted. It was re9nlved on the motion of Cr Robinson seconded by Cr Mitchell " That this council hold a special meeting for the purpose of confirming a special order re pollution of rivers and streams on the 4th of November at 2.30 p.m." It was resolved to tnke stf-ps to exchange two road linen through the Moutoa Instate leading to the Manawatu rivf-r at fiaka. Proposed by Cr MoKenzie, seconded by Cr Hammond, and carried, "That the overseer be instructed to examine the roads where owners have re ceived notice to clear the gorse off them, and report at next meeting." It was decided to request Mr James Reid to furnish plans and an estimate for a wafchout for the tram engine. The council then went into committee to discuss a proposal to borrow money to make Hopkin's line and construct a bridge over Iho Oroua river, and on resuming, the following resolution was reported carried : — Proposed by Cr Ransom seconded by Cr McKenzie, " That the counciltake the necessary steps to raise a loan under the provisions of t';e Government Loans to T ocal Bodies Act, sufficient to construct the balance of Hopkins' road 10 the Oroua rive-, and to pay half the ooit

At the ingtanc- of Of Saxon, fchf* overs cv was instructed to give an estimate for some \v- rk on Lee's linp, and to liave parts of the Feildmg Halcombe road repaired. He was also instructed to put a man on Frecklington's line. On the motion of Cr Sanson, seconded by Cr McKenzie, it was resolved, '• That the overseer prepare an estimate of the cost of repairs to be done on Taylor's road, and lay the same before the Council at the next meeting." The overseer was instructed to stop all wheeled traffic over the bridge in Hughey's bush on the Awa-huri-Feilding road, for repairs, on Monday next. Accounts were passed, and the Council then adjourned. — Advocate.
