The Mayor.
We remind our readers that before the general election takes place, they will have to elect a Mayor. It is time that the burgesses looked around to find one to nil such an important office. We have been fortunate in having, for the last two years, Mr Gower as Mayor, who has worked well for the town, and done his best. We do not know if this gentleman intends to seek re-election, but if he did we should be well pleased to see him returned, though, at the same time, we do think it a mistake to make the office a gift to one man. The Mayor, for the time being, is our chief citizen, and the office should be held an honour, to be reached by attention to the duties of Borough Councillor, and should be open to each senior councillor in turn. We do not exhaust our Councillors by such a process, as there is nothing to prevent an ex-Mayor from again becoming a councillor, and it would have the advantage of further training the burgesses in the difficulties besetting local government.
