Manawatu Herald. THURS DAY , OCTOBER 2, 1890. To Electors and Candidates.

\\\: .': i nl-.'.i m d to draw attention to tho tollowiiiy cxiiHct from a subh'iidrr in Saturdays Post : — •• rienrv Hunny is the. Hr^i (.•andidflte, in tliis part ol the colony at least, who has followed the <?ood

old custom of announcing his political views in the form of an address. There are many advantages attending the adoption of this course. The candidates views on the leading political topics of the day are placed on record in a clear and concise form. There is ho room left for niisrt-ppre-hension, and the address can always be called up in judgment hereafter if there is any trimming or change of front. Its words cannot be disputed, as those of a report, of a spepoto sometimes are, when the blame is conveniently thrown on the reporter. At one time eTery candidate felt bound to place his views before the electors in form of an address, but iiow it is fashionable to prefer taking" the electors in sections and making speeches to them. The old style has much to recommend it." This is undoubtedly true, and it has the further advantage of hottesty and boldness. A candidate should, above nil things, desire that there should be no lurking suspicion that he is all things to all men, but like the captain qf. a man-of-war should boldly hoist his flag on entering into the engagement, and nail it to the mast until the .battle is finished. We do not seek to induct' a candidate to ruin himself by expensive advertising, but it should surely be posI sible to plainly state the chief planks of his political platform, shortly and clearly-. It hfls liproiite almost, necessary that the electors should insist that this step is taken, more especially when the present battle is considered, ns there are distinct points of very great interest at issue, about which there must be not " fiippity floppity " work, Since writing the above Mr Wilson has inserted an advertisement containing his vie«vs; Which' we will take ail early opportunity of reviewing.
