FIRES.

SvrcnTUY evening proved very unfortunate to two householders, as their premises narrowly e^apod being burnt to the ground.

A gentleman staying at Mr Stansell's hotel left a candle burning in his bod room between seven and eight in the evening, and the window open. A pun' of wind moved the blind over the candle, and it immodiatolv ignited, and set the curtains on fire, in falling they set the cavp^t alight and burnt some of the b<nl clothes. Fortunately it was soon discovered and after som^ work the flames were nut out. The risk is covered in the Standard Insurance Co.

As at seven on the same evening Mr Curti , the postmaster, was just coing into the business portion of his premises when his aid was called in to quench a fire in one of the children's bpdrooms. The fire originant in exactly a similar manner to tlie above, and \vh°n Mr Curtis «aw it, the flames had hold of the blind and curtains.

He had a good fight, pulling down the blinds and stamping them out, and in his efforts got one hand severely burnt. He bad an insurance on his effects in the New Zealand Insurance Company's offie<\ and reckons his loss at £7,
