TO THE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATU HERALD.
Sir, — I read with great interest your remarks on the Case of Becker, and the punishment awarded, I think with a great many people here that the sentence was very severe. lam sure that if the prisoner had not been a foreigner he would have asked for two .T.F'sora Magistrate Six months is a long sentence, intended for —as I take it — aggravated cases or criminal's punishment. Bad language must be put down by every right thinking person. If the prisoner had been a thief he would have got one month, because he gets drunk and looses his senses he gets six months, surely this is not right ? The prisoner has friends that mean to try if there is not some means of getting an alteration in his sentence. There has never been any dishonest thing charged to the prisoner since he has been in the Colony, and because he gets drunk he is sent to goal amongst the worst criminals for a term of six months. There is not much justice in that. Hoping you will find space for above. I, have &c, A Foreioxer.
