A Painful Accident.

As the evening train was running between Moitutu and Mr Rowland's house, Mr Stephen's the driver of the train noticed something on the side of the rails. He was unable to distinguish what it was, hut shut off steam and "slowed" up. Before the train could be pulled up the cowcatcher bad struck the head of a man who had Iv-en lyinci alongside tbe rails, asleep. AfW stopping, the officials walked back to find how much damage had been dono, and found the man still lying by the rails, and much hurt ou the h^ad. He had evidently had his bead within five inchps of the rails. The man was brought into Mrs Allen's Boarding house, when Mr Fraser our local chemist paid him a visit. Upon examination it was found that the head was the only part damaged, but that had been terribly knocked about, a bolt, apnavontly having made a deep round hole at the back of the head throe inebea deep ; there were also three long dean outs across it as well. Mr Fraser out all the hair away and fastened tbe wounds up

with plaster. We learn that the man's name is Cronin, and has been working about the district for some little time, he was seen in town yesterday morning the worse for liquor. Of course he was insensible after the accident, but early this morning he appeared to be conscious, though he was insensible to feeling. He loft by the morning train for Wanganui hospital. No blame can be attached in any wav to the driver.
