Orpheus in the Oven.
♦ Mr Bmnajjd's joke about the '* baker roll " and the " barcarolle " h™ just received a remarkably pneti.al illußfcration. Siguor Mascagni, a young Livornese, has recently exchanged the rule of baker for that of composer with striking success. Hia coroedyopera, '• Cavalleria Eusticana," was refused by a celebrated firm of publishers ; bub when it gained the prize in a pub ie competition, they renewed negotiations with a view to obtaining the copj right. Ihe ex'baker, however, dec lued their advances, and succeeded iv disposing of Jiis work on such good terms elsewhere as would satisfy the most exacting member of the lucorporated Society of Authors. Siguor Mascagni is not only a good man of business ; hs has shown that he pos* gesics the not less valuable quality of artistic patience, having stipu ated for a period of no less than two years and a half in which to compose his ne^t opera. That is something truly wonderful in these days of pot boiling.
