HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. THURSDAY, 7 AUGUST. All the afternoon sitting wii token up in considering the report of tho Public Petitions Committee recommending that Mr Daniel Mahoney'e olaim for remuneration as an architeot be referred to the Government for consideration. Mr Grimmond's amendment was carried on the voices, viz., " That in the opinion of this House If r Mahoney's claim for compensation should lie reconsidered, and that the report on his petition be 'referred back to the committee to estimate the amount of compensation that ought to be allowed." Evihikq Sitting, school committle election. Mr J. W. Steward, for the eighth sueeessive year, moved the second reading of the School Committees Election Bill, to redetine the term householder— bo as to include everymaleorfemaleadult householder, even parent or guardian of a chili attending school, and en goldfields every holder of a miner's right — to repeal the cumulative vote in the School Committee elections, and to provide for the nomination of candidates prior to the day of election. The second reading was agreed to without debate, and the committal of the Bill was set down for Monday next. MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS ACT AMIHDIfXNT BILL. This Bill, drawn up by Mr W. J. Steward to enable Borough Councils to make bylaws under which traction engines can travel thought the streets of Boroughs, was read the second time. LAW PRACTITIONERS' DISQUALIFICATION. Mr Verral's Bill, to disqualify legal practitioner! from candidature of Parliament within twelve months of their being in active praotice, was read tho second tint without disoussion coroners' inquests bill. This Bill, which was originally in tho Legislative Council, with the Hon. Mr Skvimski, was passed through committee with merely verbal amendments. Its original object was to make tho dead -house of every Hospital a publio morgue if thero is no other morgue within two miles, and compel the Hospital authorities to receive dead bodies for inquest purposes A new clause was added giving Juror's 7/6 for attendance. The Bill was reported with amendments and put through the final stages. The House then rose. FRIDAY 8 AUG. The Minister for Education gave notice of a motion as follows : — " That tho manuscrint report and proofs of tho speech of the Hon. member for Waitotara made on the 2nd of July, 1890, containing accusations against the Government, be referred to the Reporting Debates Committee for comparison with the Hansard report." As an amendment to tho motion to go i lto Committee for Supply. Mr Dawnie Stewart moved — " That having regard to the redaction which has been made in the Estimates, and especially in the salaries of Civil servants, with a view to further retrenchment, the House resolves to reduce the honorarium paid to members by £f>o per session, and that the Government be requested to bring in a Bill this session to give effect to the proposal," II members were not prepared to sacrifice themselves they had no right to reduce tho salaries of Civil servants as theyjwere doing.
Mv Brown seconded the motion pro i»rnut, but accused Mv Stewart of incon- j ■istency in moving it. The amendm ent was ultimately lost by I 49 to 19. and the Housa went into Committee of Supply, The estimates were further considered till the House rose at 3.15 a.m.
