Short Sentences Advocated by an English Judge.
» Mr Justioo Matthew, an English ' Judge, recently s«id, in charging a Grand Jury, that the princip.e of inflicting short sentences seemed to lira to be perfectly right. He considered that sencing to loog terms of penal servitude persons charged with stealing trifling artioles was barbarous, The remarks of the the Judge were called forth in consequence of the severe strictures wh eh had been passed upon a Recorder who had adopted the fjstem of passing short sentences in a class of cases where it had been the custom previously to inflict sentences of seven y<-ars pennl ervitudf .
