FRIDAY 25th JULY.

The Minister of Public Works made his statement. The balance to the credit of the Public Works fund is £732,533. The fund is divided into three parts : — Part 1. Miscellanious expenditure chargeable to loan ; Part 2. North Island Main Trunk Railway ; Part 3. Railway work generally. Thse were 1813 miles of Government railways in operation on 31 March 684 miles in the North ; and 1129 in the South ; 43 miles have been opened during the year. The Railway Commissioners show' ft profit equalling L 2 19s 4d per cent on L13,899,955— the total cost of open lines. In the remarks about the working railways it is stated that it is intended to carry out a complete system of roads in connection with the North. Island Trunk line. It is stated that the Palmerston to Woodville line has absorbed L7OOO more than the appropration for it. A vote is, to be asked for L 42.470 to wards opening Crown Lands before sale, of which L 35.000 is to be expended during the coming year L 40.056 is the amount purposed spending for the North Main Trunk line. L 40.000 is set down for school buildings. A ighthouse is proposed for Stephen's Island, Cook's strait. FRIDAY, 25th JULY. All the afternoon and part of the evening was taken up in discussing Mr Larnach's motion that no further appointments be made to the Legislative Council until after next meeting of Parliament. The motion was lost by 8f) to 34. The estimates made no progress except in one item — Audit Office salaries — The opposition carried a reduction of £950 in this item.
