Wonderful Achievements of Surgery.
. • At a sitting of the Surgical Congress at Berlin, Professor (i luck, of Ber lin, gave an exhibition showing a most valuable advance in surgery - namely, the successful substitution of catgut, ivory, and bone freed from •chalk, for defects iu bones, muscles, aud nerv«» sinews. Tbe juices of the body are sucked up in the inserted material, thereby establishing the junction of the separated ends, without any shortening of the part. He presented the casea ot patients in whom there had been an insertion of from six to ten centimetres of catgut t. supply defectsin the leaders of the hands, to whicb ' complete mobility had been restored. This case had pvev'onsly been impossible. In the c ise of another patient Professor Glnck removed a tumons from the thigh, causing a considerable defect in the bone/ He inserted Ivory, and no shortening ends. Iu another case he removed a large piece of newe in tho groin and inserted eatguc, aud the functions remained completely satisfactory. 'J heae are considered wonderful achievements.
