The British Army and Young Colonials.
• Amended Regulations have been issued, an f i are published in the New Zealand Gazette of the 3rd July, under which Commissions in the British army may b« obtained by Officers of Colonial Local Military Forjes. The candidate must be a bond fide colonist; must be withij the ages of 19 and 22 on the Ist January of the } r ear he is allowed to present himself for e > amination , must apply for a nomination to the Governor, through his Commanding Officer, or such other channel as the Governor may prescribe, in sufficient time to allow of arrangements being made for his undergoing the required examinations before he has exceeded the limits of the specified age, and before being permitted to present himself for examination in military subjects will be required to undergo a qualifying- literary examination in Mathematics, French, or German, English, the elements of Geometrical Drawing and Geography ; bat he is exempted from a literary examination if he has passed certain specified Civil Service or University Examinations. If he obtain a literary qualification he will then have to undergo a military examination in the e!ements of fortification, military to pography, the elements of tactics, and military law. Sets of examination papers will be forwarded to the Governor for examination of candidates in the colony, the papers being returned to the War Office, London, for adjudica* tion. Two Army Commissions will be allowed to New Zealand an. nually. Here is an opportunity for our young colonials to distinguish them* selves and earn undying fame.
