New Zealand Hemp.

Mr Charles Spurling, of London, reports on April 19 : — Referring to ray last advices of 21st ult. our market for New Zealand hemp,, which, between that date ami stil recently, showed a'fkrther decline of 20s per ton an good, and 20s to 80s on common and middling «orts, has since recovered, and the rates obtained at our public sales ! of last Wednesday are nearly 'on n- par with those ruling on the departure of the last mail. During the lastf day or two there have been free .buyers of both sisal, Manila, and New Zealand hemps, but holders-,. both., of Mania and New Zealand are to-day withdrawing from the market, whilst a sale yesterday of Manila hemp at L35 cf. and i , April- Mny shipment shows an advance <i £3 to £3 10s per ton for the week. These sudden and rapid changes iv our. fib re markets are to be accounted for partly by the enhanced val:ie of silver, and the rapid advance of the Eistem Exchanges, and partly through the firmness ( of , Manila houses, who continue to store their hemp rather thau to force sales. A'lded to this, it is generally thought that the arbitary terms impose I by the American Eope Makers' Syndicate are such as may cause a collapse of its operatiors earl ; er than was expected In this changed state of affairs holders here' prefer to look on rather than quit stocks at present ra'es. For arrival there has been but little done in New Zealand the only reported snle being 60 tons "guaranteed fair We'lington " at £19 per ton c.i.f, With the view of meeting the wishes of several of his con-pspondftnts, the writer begs to annex the m u'k-; and p rtienlarg of the leading pan els of New Zea'und hemp sold nt auction since the 21st ult. He fenrs however, that until a more general and uniform standard is recognised, th<t. tho particulars annexed will prove of little value fo exporters, the more- so as the quali* ties under the same mark differ so

materially. I ..The- ..particulars, 'with mm-ks, places oj.'llyjnienly and qualities, ate : — ''•-•tW. W r el)ipgtoft.'r-Tiuft;.y Waiau, £27 10s; Waihoja, £27 ss; PS, £25 Vj% per ton.
