Manawatu Herald. FRIDAY, MAY 9 1890. The Borough.
—• » r We have great pl^sure in callinj - attention to the estimates publish < by the Borough Council of the re ceipts and proposed expenditure fo the next t*e v months Consider iug the ireomo first it will L uotioed that there is an increase o » £178. the; rate rvtnan:ug at fift ci pence in the pound as usual Thi (J is an addition of over £200, an oi ■he pi evious estimate stood a sum o * £60 for uncoilected rates iriii^t thii
year, owinyj to the attention of the 'Colt ofcor, he aaount stands at 133, and a lust meefiig had been reduced tv £19. This is as i ought to be, rales have to be paid, and it is better forth* general body »f r tey yers that rhey are collect m time for expenditure, than iiiCiir an ..ovei'diai't- for works, i>nd cj lected rales to i epay he advance. A sum of £20 a year is often thus save.i. The chief additi mto the ncome has arisen t oui the increased value of the property in the town, but though t.ius shovviug a large additional Vd.uo, the .aiuatiou i». still very light, as we believe we were the only town who al owed our valuations to drop to the •• bed rock " of the owest values We arc. now able to appreciate such action. We i.oweverhope that those entrusted with the admin stration of our public busines-j wiil carefully heed this fact, and abstai from a ticipati.m of revenue ; the path is clear of overdraws now, let it be always 89 In the expeiiture, uuder the head of road maintenance is a sum of £280, and another item of £189 for wages. We do not like the way it is put, as the i e-n for wages is incured only for maintenance, and the two sums shou d have been pu together The amount for exptndilur«* is smal', compared with what we should like t har< for spera< i ig, but it will be sufficient to do what necessary work is needed, and 'f all our roads are not metalled, we have the satisfaction of kn nving that we are not rated hearily. We think that our Mayor, ouncillors aud I own Clerk are to be heartily con* gratulated on the estimates furnished, and they offer an emphatic contra* diction to th se who prophesied calamity on the formation of theBorough. At present we have experienced nothing hut good from its institution, and have had m re work don* with less to pay, than wo ob* tamed under the administration we severed ourselv«-s from.
