Terrible RailWay Accident in N. S. Wales.
A 'errible railway accident happened at $athurat on Friday night. A great crash like au explosion was heard about 7 o'clock proceeding from the <ates in Russell street. An engine was f ,uud with the front crushed to atoms, as were carriages and trucks, and Beveral dead bodies were found lyinsj abcnt. It appears thnt a mixed train left for Sydney at G.BO p.m. and when . near Raglan sever tl truck couplings gave way, and ' many trucks came down from the Zigzag, past Bag lan at a great speed, And dashed tbrOßgh
Kelso Station. Atßathurstu etoods Irian just about to start for Sydney foiled to g«t out of the way of the runaway tracks, and a terrible col* lision resulted. Tliß guard's van and passenger carriages were completely telescoped by the engine, and the train from Bourke is nothing but splinters. The driver of the Bourk.e train bus* tamed severe iojuries. Two fireman were al o seriously injured, and had a miraculous escape of deat h. Those killed are— Michael Downie, Mrs Franklyn, Henry O'Cennor, Maud Radford, ai d Miss Gadfrey. Two others whose names have not been asoertained sustained injuries from which they are unlikely to recover r Xhe station vaster at Raglan, when he saw the runaway, wired to Ba* fchurst of the danger, but the tremendous speed at which the detatched portion of the train travel* led left no time for the line to be cleared. The station master at Bathur t states that wften Kelso wired that No £6 bad broken away the up goods train had left for Kelso. He at oace rushed on the platform, and saw tbe runaway crossing the bridge over the Mac* quario River at a terrific pace. No time seemed to have elapsed before lie heart a dreadful crash, followed by the noise of escaping .^teara p t ud iinaHhimg timbers.. . The runaway train consisted of five trucks loaded with gooda and sheep, one ampty horsobox. one six wheeled carriage and a composite brak« van. The two latter, besides several of the trucks were smashed to atoms, and BOree portions of them Vere thrown over the top of the eugiiie on to the tender. The engineitaelf was broken and crushed up to the tubes of the boiler.
