The Crater of the Ruapehu
A party, includ : ng Mr Hill, Inspector of Schools, a representative oi tie Hawxes Bay Herald, and several local residents, recently ascended Ruapebu and Ngaruhoe. They had a Jmagnificent view from the crater of' the former, and were able to make a closer inspection than any previous explorers. They found the lake in the crater to be boiling furiously ,_ a point which has hitherto been in dispute. It is believed that it has boiled only since the Tarawera eruption Since then Ngaruhoe has also been much more active, and in what use to be known as the Black Crater there was an inverted cone of boili.ig su'phnr, with evider. not recent activity.
