Sporting Notes.

♦- . (Bx " Gipsy King.") " Good-bye."— On Friday last Mr Frank Bell left Wanganui for Australia with Escutcheon (Musket— Eosette), Rossiter (by May King), Waiter (Somnus — Barmaid), and Fair Ellen (Somnns— Lady Ellen). Mr Bell is accompanied by " George|" Laing, the well known steeplechase rider, who will ride Eossiter in any of his races. Fair E len, I fancy, is being taken for sale purposes. When Escutcheon's stock are eeen on the trac'c as three-year-olds I feel certain we will lament his departure. He served 27 mares last season. Since the termination of the season he has been doing good work, and a month or 6 weeks on the other side will probably put him straight and properly placed, his new owner will find him a profitable investment. Waiter is in pretty fair condition, but he has not been seen out since his second to Eclat in the Maiden Plate at tin Spring Meeting in 1888, nnd subsequent won success at Mana* vratu and Rangitikei. He-has grown up into a good hurdle horse, and as he receivod his schooling from Mr J. Puvcell, of Foxton it is needlesg to say Waiter is proficient ac that game. Since his unsuccessful trip to the Auckland and Takapuna meetings he has been indulged with a spell, and has only been doing light exercise work and probably is not so forward as Escutcheon or Waiter. No doubt TJossiter will be a handy horse for up'country or small steeplechase meetings. His Egmont Sfceeplechaso win wns de. cidely a " fluke," and I am told be tbose who were in the know that the Wellington Steeplechase which he, won last year was a lump of lucky but I fancy he won it fair and square

Fair Ellen's best performance was probably running second to Eedwood for the Juvenile Stakes at Napier as a two.yearold, and her dead heat with Prudence at Foxton. Bar Es* cutchoon the others are a very moderate lot of horses and I expect Waiter to win more than either Ros* siter or Fair Ellen.
