Tollgates.

Having suffered from the power given to local b xlios to orect tollgates on voad , we are naturally interested in the > xcitement now being manifested at the Hutt Council's iutention to erect other tailgates in place of the one they had to abandon at^Ngahuaranga. We cannot help thinking that tho opponents of the gates are going about their business in a very blundering fashion, when they appeal for funds to go to law with, when the Act stares them in the face, which certainly empowers local bodies to erect these obstructions. The lawman make and unmake, and it would seen the simplest and |wisest course for thpse who desire to see such old fashionod nuisances removed, to get up a monster petition to Parliament to amend the law. 'I his would be the quickest and cheapest and most effectual means to se{Hu?<j'tEe : .<Bnd : desited. To further the arguemenis of the opponents to the gates we can supply evidence that thera are some local bodies that have the minimum of traffic, on unmetalled ioada. who can threaten to erect gate', even when the expense of collaction of the tolls would cost more than the totnl collected, and to prevent and futhur proposa's of a similar nature, the settlers within their districts wou'd be favourable to a change in the law. We trust then that the agitation instead of bring local, against a loc il nuisance, may be broadened ont into tie expression of a dissent to the col ection of revenue by such antipated methods.
