The Advancement of Electricity.
_♦_ — _^_ — A Londou correspondent writes : — i There aye evident signs that before 1 1 long the motive power employed on ouv railways will be electricity. The new underground line-, in -London ; fiom Monument Square,^ North of i London Bridge, to SttfokweU is .nearly -finished, .and will he opened for traffic about -the -beginning of i May. The trains will he cSiv.wh by elfctiic motors. Aoothev.- oleciiio , railway lias been projected to run from the Queeu'e road, Bayswater, along Oxford street and Ho'boru, into the heart of thed|j& ptobably near the bank. Tl|frNHpfe to have a double tunnel at W^ depth of 50ft below lhe surface of the streets. Its cost is es hnated at £400,000 per mile. The line to ■ Stockwell has cost £250,000 per mile. These now lines am a necessity. The growing -traffic in London is 'enormous, and the met'opo* litan railway w'th all its conveni* ences hns not capacity enough to relieve the streets of tbe teirible traffic It is only a matter of time; and pov haps nearer than wg imagine, when these electric railways are pioved profitable, that some of .the. larger courpaivps will adopt the same system. It is no soeiet, tliat the Midland Railway Company "are seriously considering the question of allowing trial trips to be marie between London and Derby with an improved electric motor lately perfected. The inventor says he can draw tiaiusthat distance at 25 per cent less cost than can be done by steam, with more ad* vantages. This experiment will probably take place during the coming summer.
