Distress in Taranaki.
The bush fires are now moderat* ing, but the damage is great. It is estimated that in the Egmont and Moa districts nearly half the pasture has been burnt up, which, will reduce 1 th'a output of butter ty more than one half. Many small farmers ■will -be unable to hold out during the wiater months anless tlaey receive, assistance. A deputation of farmers waited on Mr Samuel, M.H.R., in reference to the distress experienced by the bush fires. They Btated that; in some districts nearly'the whole of the pasture was destroyed, beside fences and the dwellings of many settlers. There was no feed for their cattle, and although the price, to be, obtained was merely nominal, there was nothing loft for the settlers but to sell them. It was stated that a great many of the settlors would be unable to find grass seed to re*sow their laud, and that, without aid from the Government the Settlers would, in many cases, have to desert their holdings and come upon the Charitable Aid Board for support; The deputation urged Mr Samuel to apply to the Government for aid. Subscriptions fare being raised in New ' Plymouth to aid the settlers, but the sum collected will not be sufficient. — Press Association.
