Mutton and Flax.
» HI As a justification for all the agitation made to stir the Government up to help the hemp millers, it will prove interesting 1 to. compare the position of the Flax industry with the Frozen meat industry. For the year 1889 the value of Frozen mea exported was £783,374 and the value of 17,074 tons Of hemp was £3G1,---■lB2, . . As a word of encouragement it may be mentioned that onl t y the steady consignments of meat, secured 'the frozen trade, and ie will be, by the steady consignments 'of hemp, that this trade will be made. In reference to this we say most strongly, that the' wisest course for the hemp miller to adopt is, to make all his consignments to the London market. There he has the combe titionofthe world. And by forcing the Americans there, he prevents any ring, for which they are notorious, being formed to fatten the speculator and-despoil the miller. A few short months have dispersed th» hopes w* formed of ttfe^ftdtantages of direct dea'ingfl, the; effect of which has boeu only to demoralise the chief market, and to leave the millers stranded without a. Yankee nrdev.
