Serious Bush Fires.
THIRTY MILES OP COUNTRY IK FLAMES. From New Plymouth on Brd March we learn that the bush fire* were still raging, with no signs of abatement. The amount of damage done cannot be estimated, but it isevpected to exceed that ol the Stratfo d fire. In several localities all mea 8 of communication is cut off. TUe loss in pasture, fence*, and catt c 13 great, besides a considerable number of homesteads. A telegjam was received by the Mayor, asking that assistance be sent from Ne.w Plymouth to the homeless settlers at Egmont village. Expresses were at once despatched to bring them to town. The Borough Council held a special meeting to devise some means of rendering aid. A settler and his wife are missing, and fears are entertained for their safety. The fires extend from Strat* ford to Sentry Hill, the whole forest between these two points, a distance of over thirty miles, being apparently inflames. Several country bridges have been burnt A party of mountain climber* have arrived and state that it was both difficult and"dangp9rous tb u gefijthrougtt. Strenuous exertions are being made by the settlers to save their dwellings, and they are kept constantly at wprk battling with the flames.
