An Accident.

An accident which might have resulted in a'rery serious catastrophy, and certainly was ft ?ery singular one, occurred to two ladies on Tuesday afternoon. The two ladies, accompanied by the two daughters of the driver, were enjoying a drive to the beach, to reach which it is necessary to travel along the river beach near the heads We have before now directed the attene tion of the authorities to the existence of certain logs on this portion of the read which made it a difficult and dangerous spot to travel along. As the party, seated in a two wheeled trap, and hau'ed by a quiet horse approached these logs, the driver had to fac« the trouble. of either keeping so itti off the projecting timber, so that the beach available would be at a perilous acute angle, into very deep water, or else, to shave the log very close* Our friends tried to keep close to the log, bat unfortunately drove one wheel over ir t and it had the effect, not of throwing the vehie'e on its side, which had it done, would have thrown the occupants over the ledge of the river, into deep water, and si" powerful current, with sure direful consequences that we shudder to! think of it, but marvellously threw, the trap with its occupants completely topsy turvy, as well ! as the hose. An eye witness driving a buggy following is' entirely inablei to express thf process, but deoiares that when he got up to the scene of the Accident, the trap was upside down, with its passengers under neath in the water, that the horse was still between the shafts with his heels in the air, and that (he splash board was down in the sand up to the floor. The passengers had to crawl out through the water and between the floor and the seat, of coulse thoroughly w«t and very iniieh shaken. Mr Walsh lent alLassis' l tance to right the trap and hone, and strange to say nothing was hurt, except one shaft which, wat slightly

twisted. The ladies and children re' entered the trap and drove back home After this we trust immediate steps will be taken by the Councillors of the Awahoa Biding to have this road made safe, « this is the only outlet to the enjoyment of the ocean beach.
