Martinborough.

What is worth doing is *7?rth ctoing well, and the Martinborough people do their best when occasion requires . If any proof of this were required|it was forthcoming on Friday night when a concert and dance was given in the Town Hall for a bene* volent purpose. Mr Reeves was a driver of one of the coaches taking in Martinborough as one of his sta* tions, and the day before Christmas met with a terrible accident which ended in the amputation of one of his legs. The thrill of sympathy was felt more acutely in Martin* borough (although Mr Reeves was not living there), and some of the residents said " Let's do something for him. He's not a bad sprt of a fellow at all, and we must give him a lift in his trouble." No sooner said than there was a hearty re* sponse ; tickets were printed and they went off in all directions, until some grumbled because the- Town Hall was not 1 arger. . "When Frdfiy evoning arrived Maryborough began, to look lively. • Horsemen, traps, buggies and brakes came in from all directions, and it was evident the concert was to be patronised by a crowed house. This was the case when the oveture was played, the music for which was excellent and supplied by Mrs M. < Wood, her daughter Mrs M. Yarn . hare 1 aud Mr Maguire. We must J not forget to mention the music of i he Martin borough Band outiido the ' i -■ ■ . c ■■'- o; ■ .

The concert over, the worn was cleared for dancing which was carried on vigorously until after 3 in the morning. The gentleman who carried out the arrangements so satisfactory were Messrs Speakman, Ba^Hss, Green, G. Pain, E. Gillis, H. Hodge, G. Croot, and W. J. Callum, and they did their work well. It is good to find such a feeling of sympathy and such efforts to help such an unfor tunate sufferer as Mr Beeve. A little more of this kind is wanted. We must not forget to mention that Mr A Bowers of Greytown ran a brake down with several persons from Greytown at a very low charge, his desire being to help the committee to secure a packed house and a goodly sum for the invalid. — Wairarapt, Standard.
