A THEMENDOUS TOWER.
The Eiffel To wor is to be eclipsed, '■ It lias been decided to erect in New j York a tower sixteen hundred feet '■ lii.rjli. ov <580 feet higher thnn the' Paris one. The designer is Mr "W. L. Judson, and a company with a capital of £.500,000 has already been formed to carry out the project, the execution of which will be entrusted to the Pliomiv ''ridge Company. Evidently tho designer's conception of buitnty is the cire'e. From a base of solid masonry 400 ft in diameter, into which the ten main Wised up-rig-lif.-i are embedded, the structure rises with a gradually eonvfvging in- 1 cliuii towards tho ppex, ■which has a diameutcr of 250J'(;. Wire cables extend from upright to upright, and from trellis to trellis, giving on all bides a uniform support, and a '• strength almost incalculable " It is proposed to ascend the t">wer in tTo ways. One of these is by a carriage drive, which encircles thft inner extremities of tho structure, with an ascent of Bft in each 100 ft. This roadway will be 75ft wid« at the ba.se nnd 50ft at the top, allowing space for four carriages abreast to pass up or down or turn at any point. The drive encircles th« tower 17 times, the distance from basa to apex being 3.76 miles. 1 lie ascent is so gradual that teams can trot up and down at will. From the opposite side of the base from which tlio drin.. .starts, begins a ear track, which a'so winds »round seventeen i.imes from base to summit beneath tli < ■ carriage road. Upon this track iiro to be run every 0 c half minute (;rns i.Mpable of seating 1 sixty pgraons, o'idi operated by the Judson pneumatic vysiern. It is estimated that.
