♦ Broadbrim, gives the following amusing account of a luclc'css matrimonial arrangement :—
Israel Tsaicson carao here from Buda Pesth about seven years ago having a family of fiva girls, Pvebecca Ruth, Raohel, Sara, and Johan. Now, by sornp, this might be considered a blessing, and so it would have been if the girls had grown up as they would have done at Buda Pesth, and have helped their father in. liis^aild^s shop. But tha- girls grefr % i*-^ew York gant Yaiikee notions. They did not like work, and they did like pionic? and shultzenfests, and the old man found them a burden instead of a bkssing. In his distress' he consulted t i wise Hebraw friend, whose business and pl.easuijßvJ^fel.inatoßri making, and he promised to get Rebecca, ■& husband- for a hundred and ftfty dollars— fifty dollars down and one^hxr^dred on the consummation' of the bargain Abraham Haltzmeyep .was a , pedlar ; he had been married 'three tithes ; his heart was now an aching void, and he was looking about for sbnie J on* to con- i solo him, and he confided his situation and wants to , Rabbi ; Me^or. ; Rabbi Meyer thought he could do the job for him, but wanted . 25 .dollars for a starter, which Abraham planked down likealitt'eman. Negotiations were opened and Htiltzemeyer. was taken down to Isaacson's store. Rebecca, however, was not, looking for fourth mortgages on pedlars. She had seen Mines Levy, who kept a store jpimd the corner. , and to see was to* to ye , for Moses was" '" fair to look upoßjtSlbteit his hair was red,- 1 add his height was -fonr feet nine. | But the Rubbi worked with Mr Isaacson, and he agreed to take Haltsmeyer fjr his son-in-law and gave gave him five hundred dollars to take Rebe«ca off his hands The money was to bo given to Rebecca, and she wns to give it to ljef hnsband. , a.s soon as the ceremony was over. The i betrothal took place and evfiryt.hing : | was arranged for the wedding Isaacson drew the money aud guve to Rebecca. ( A,; hall, was ; hhed, music was engaged, the supper ordered, the friends invited and . the Rabbi notified to le on hand. In the meantime Moses Levy was not idle ; he packed his gripsack, sent a note to Rebeca white her. fetheivwas qguyt y preparing,,^r -ihe weeding;, wfiieh ... was to take place that night. She sent her trunk round the corner to Moses, and the pair jumped ;on ;fh> afternoon train for Philadelphia, where Moses and Rebecca were* married ly a Justice of Peace Now, the matrimonial broker sues Isaacson for one hundred dollars, for the girl has got a husband and Haltzrneyer is nearly crazy ; he has lost a wife ; he has lost five hundred dollars, and the twenty-five dollars he paid to Rabbi to get her. The only man who really appears to have, profited by the operation is Moses Levy ; he has a wife and five hundred dollars to start with. ButIsaacson has still four angels on his hands ; perhaps Haltzmeyer can get one of them.
