Manawatn Herald. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1889. LEADINGS QUESTIONS.

In a case that was lefore the President Magistrate on Wednesday, considerable discussion took place as to the right of Connsel to put leading questions to his own witnesses. Many who were present were probably puzzled as to the ground of the objections which were made to the questions put. Judge Broad defines a leading question as "a question which in itself suggests the answer required to it." Ho states that no leading question should be put in the direct examination of a witness upon any point at all material to the issue, but that upon cross examination the witness may be asked leading questions. If a witness is either hosiile to the party calling him or unwilling to give evidence, the oonrt may allow the examination in chief to l>o conducted as a cros3 examination.
