SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of tbe Fox ton School Commit cc was held at the Town Cleric's office yesterday morning at ren o'c'ock. Present — Messrs Thvnne (chairman) "W. G. isoljinson, W. L. Coe, J. E. McMillan.. C- Honore and r. Gibson. . Miss Prendegasfc was also in r.ttendance. On opening the meeting the chairman explained that r. l)a i l^een convened to enquire into the charges made against Miss Prendegast by the persous signing tho petition which had oeeo delivered to him and winch he read : — Foxton, Nov. 7, 1889. To the Chairman of the Foxton iSchool Cotnmi tee. Sir, — "We the undersigned would respectfully ask y nr aasistince in having a stop put to the innncer in j which our children are beaten by Miss Prendegast during school hours. Signed by Samuel Howan, William L. Coe, E. McLean, 'Ihos. P. Gibson, A. King. M WaX .J. E. Allan, John W. Gower, 'Ihos. Vautier, A. Jonson, A. S. East n, ,f: P. Murray, C. D. Hawkins, James Coley, Mis Ingram andL. H. Burr. The chairman stated that he had seen Mr Howan in the morning but lie stated that he must leave for the mill, though it was only a quarter of an hour- before th*» time fixed for the meeting. His complaint would therefore fill through The Chiirman then called on Mr Coe, who stated that two months ago bis son had be n struck across the hand and a big weal raised, he however would not make any complaint. Mr Gibson was then called on, and he stated that he had no specific charge to make but he had signed the petition without reading- it, and simply to allow . the matter to be enquired into. Mone of the other complainants appeared. Messrs Coe and Gibson took no part in t c committee's deliberations owing to their having taken part in the petition. On the motion of Mr Thynne so conded by Mr ; obinson, it wa9 iinanimously agreed—" That as Mv\ Bowan tho promoter of the petition agtinst Miss Prendegast did not ;ipp ar before the Committee, nor a^y other of the petitioners c cept Messrs Gibson and Coe, and as however Mr Coe referred to an oecurence of two month's back and Mr Gibson stated he had no specific charge, the Coi.r mittee decide that M iss i rendegast 14 exonerated from all blame, and the Committee regret the wction of parents signing such a p tition and then failing to attend to support it " This concluded the business before the committee.
