Manawatu Herald. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1889. THE DUNEDIN EXHIBITION.

The public in this Is'and hardly yet seomto appreciate the benefit the colony is likely to roceive from the Exhibition to be held nt Dunedin next mouth, 'f lie scheme has been so enlarged from tlio first initiat on of it, that it has assumed dimensions little dreamt oi' at the start. Tho buildings rover an area of twe ye and a htlf acre*, and tho concert hal is built capable of accommodating three thousand people. Exhibits from all the Colonies and Europe will bo found there, and a very largo gathering from ul' parts o- the world is sure to ta'te place. Tho Government seem convinced of this, as they are taking steps to open up tho show country of the South Island by opening up tracks, and facilitating the travelling of tourists. We regret that at prosent no steps have been taken in this district to send samples of some of our staple industries, and though the time is late, yet much might be done f the Mayor was to ca 1 a meeting and energetically canvass the millers, flock own ers and settlers. We Irivn such an unquestionable grand district, and one which must offer a striking contrast to the Australian 'Couutvy. t!i it good business might It dn • by bringing the capabilities of it under the notice of the expectod visitorfrom the other Colonies to tho Exhibition. In one portion of Mima »tv the grand Orona Estnte is umU>r offer for sale, and it is th'roforc probable that any effort put forth by the settlers to bring this district under notice, would icjeivc tlu-

hearty support of the owner The Australians are much interested in tho flax business, as they have a very 'large area ?n crops for which binder twine is needed, and as they are a wealthy and pushing body, a great impetus in the developement of dressing the fibre might be given if they could be induced to take an in terest in it. To do this wo would suggest a meeting, and a canvass for exhibits and subscriptions, and then we might ma\e some proposals as to how the area nnd capability of the Manawatu might be brought best under our visitors notice. Advev tisjiig in all our ways of life has become a necessity, and exhibitions are one way of so doing. A Country that is at pi'esent within a radius of ten miles of Foxton supporting fifty hemp mills, and has within it thousands of acres most suited for the cultivation of the green nax, is not one that should romain silent, whilst other portions of the colony are showing ff their products Wee in imagine the astonishment expressed by Australians accu tomed to require so many acms to keep a sheep, to learn that here we keep so many sheep to the acre. What will further astonish them might bo the fact, that near Cnnipbelltowu a bullock can be fattened on an acre. of land. We might go on repeating instances of how this rich country offers such striking contrasts to the land over the water, but what need have to do it here, as we are all well aware of it : but because we are it does not necessarily make others know it. It therefore behoves those who d c siru to push tho district and themselves ahead to move whilst th?re is yet time, and to leave no stone unturned to direct the attention of tho numbers expected at Dunedin to the facts connected with this coast. Wo leave further action for the present with every confidence in the hands of the Mayor, who, we are aware, has a great stake in the country, and has the well being of the district at heart.
