FORGED BANK NOTES.
The Press Association report that at Napier a large numb r of counterfeit Bank of New Zealand notes ftppen* to have been circulated during I the last few days. At ihe lnst meeting- of the Jockey Clu'i one gentleman in the course of business received six such notes, all of which we:e returned by the bank with thw word " Forgery " written across them. The counterfeit oues are splendid imitations of the real article, apparently the result of expert lithography; but by careful exumi nation the cheat is easily discovered, probaWy because tho luns used in the operation was to sma 1 Every letter aud word on the origin >l note photographed is reproduced on the forgery on a slightly smaller seale — for instance, between the sentence "One pound " at the top of a genuine note, aud the same sentence in the counterfeit, there is a difference of f evernl lines in depth and at least an eighth of an inch in the full Ing h of the sontenc* Tho counterfeits
