WIROKING FERRY CHARGES

TO THE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATI7 HERALD Sib, — With reference to your remarks on the above, it is only fair, in justice to the lessee of the ferry, to state that what you advocate is exactly what the ferryman does. Whenever there is an entertainment in Foxton, the ferryman's rule is that so long as you return before twelve the charge is only one shiling extra for horse or rider and not two shillings , but if after twelve the charge is two shillings extra. And quite right too, it is, I say. The same rule applie* in the case of foot passengers. Take the case of gome gentlemen from this side of the river who leave for town early on Saturday afternoon, perhaps iive or six of them together. Do they return home together ? Oh, no ! Some of them have very important business to attend to. The majority of them return afar twelve and 'of "dourß • feel very much annoyed when ftaktl to hand up the " extra." Indeed fo BO ne time afterwards there is a lively debate curried or, on the "Ferry and the Ferryman " and the poor ferryman comes in for a good deal of abusive ornamental language although of course he only demands that which the law gives him power to claim.

I am, Sir, Your Obedient Servant, E. D. Davks. Wwokino, Oct. Ist, 1889. [In reference to the above we are pleased to receive Mr Davies' statement, as we think the ferryman is acting very fairly if he demands only and extra shilling up to midnight. Ed.M.H.]
