Mr Hawkings has had previous experience in this line of business. The tram was over two hours late on Friday, having been detained by a truck getting derailed near Lind's mill. So many young men are carting and driving now, who seem wholly unaware of the Act relating to their trade- that it may save them some bother and expense if we quote it for their benefit. In England there is what was known as the " rule " of the road, in this colony it is set out in the Police Offences Act, 1883, and is as follows: — "Who drives any vehicle whatever or rides any animal and, when meeting any other vehicle or, animal, does not keep on the left or nearside of the road or street, or, when passing any other vehicle or animal going in the same direction, does not go or pass, or does not allow any person desirous so to do to pass, when practicable, on the right or off side of such other vehicle or animal, is liable to a penalty not exceeding ten pounds. Tenderers will be shown over the work on Friday, and tenders most be in by noon of Monday next. We mentioned, some months ago, that a stag was seen in the Fitzherbert district. It may be interesting to knew that he was well satisfied with his visit of inspection, and has decided to take up a run in that part. A week or so ago he left for the Wairarapa, but now returned with a doe. We are not surprised at his selection, as the country is exellent; but had he to pay rates he would find them heavy. An assistant cook, who must be a steady man, is wanted at the Oroua Downs estate. A good ploughman is wanted by Mr J. McLennan.

The Native inhabitants of the Chatham Islands— Maoris, as they are called— have for some time past shown refreshing contempt for the law, emulating the example of other followers of Te Whiti. Whenever they are summoned to appear before the Magistrate to answer for their little peccadilloes— amongst which non-payment of dog tax and trespass with dogs amongst the runholders' flocks are the most common — they simply ignore the magesterial writ and fail to attend. The Government have decided to insist upon due respect being paid to constituted authority, and several, members ef the Permanent Artillery Force are therefore being sent to the Chatham Islands, to co-operate with the local police arresting these offenders who do not choose to. appear on summons.— Post. On Sunday crowds of people went down to the beach, some riding, some driving. others walking. Foxton is undoubtedly fortunate in having such a grand outlet, as on a beautiful day there is nothing so bracing as an hour or two on the beach. The Pahiatua Star learns on good authority that another special settlement is about to be established in that district. The block will comprise 2000 acres and it is situated at the back of the WoodvilleMangahao, extending to the Forest Reserve. Mr Hartstone is the promoter, and the holdings are intended exclusively for Akaroa men. Special settlements so far have not been a success in this district, but the one under notice promises to be an exception, inasmuch as the land will be allotted only to those who require it for immediate settlement, Already there are a sprinkling of Akaroa men in the district, and they are of the right stamp.
