FIRE.

■ — » Ou Sunday evening, shortly, af tot five o'clock, the small shed 3a£ the wharf, adjoining the cattle yards, was burnt down. No one knoVs how the fire originated. It \ya§ first discovered by two j'oung men( Curtis and Ruekendahl, who are living in a portion of the pld Tram ' sheds. They happened to ,be looking out of a window which faces the shed and noticed a flame of ,about three feet in height issuing from the floor and co> ered portibri, 'and. fhvj immediately ran do wi/ with some btiolrets and water, and also raised the alarm fter pulling out a few skids it became impossible to get' neat 4 the shed at all, and little could ne done. In a very short time the whole building was consumed with its contents, and' to save the wharf,* the burning flax was hauled out by hooks and thrown into the riv.r. The p sts of the stockyard' are charred, so is the -planking of the wharf, and that seems the only damage to the Railway Department. VVe do not regret the disappearance of the shed, >ai it was the most absurd erection that was ever built for the purpose it was intended for. In the shed were 12 bales of fibre, • 6 of tow, % sacks of pollard, and ft boiler. It will he a question who is the loser. Some of the goods Were* short shipped by the, vwiieUu rand some left by the consignees, it appear* probably th« fire has- arisen from careless smoking.
