Manawatu Herald. FRIDAY, JULY 26, 1889. PUBLIC CORRESPONDENCE.
— __: .At the last meeting of the Biirousjh Council the Mayor w*s requested to conamunicate with the Horowhenua County- CounoHatj- to "vrhyit : s' : their intention to erect a toll gate on the main road betVeefh Fdxton and '.', Levin." In, another column wi!l be ] :seeri Mr Kebbe''s reply. The Mayo? Jlaß BUQceeded;well, onanei>qint. v in^ 1 eliciting from the Charman the' 1 reason he believes the toll gate is to be erected for. Mr KebboM hna ] Written " that at present certain j | roads leading to the W. M. liuiiway «
Company's station at Kereru, are! more used by outsiders than our own rateptyers, and that owing to the absence of aaetal, are coating the local bodies considerable sums for maintenance, consequently we consider that this justifies our raising a part of the money required from those who cause the weai? and tear." Thus Mr Kebbell up* holds the toll gate for revenue (?i purposes. The other ponion of his letter is inaccurate as regards his charge against the Manawatu County, but is accurate ap to faots. The agreement as he states was "for the completion of the main road to the railway line " and he also admits "that no metalling was done." Now as the agreement expressly stated that the road was to be nude within a time, and metalled, the breach appears to have been with the Horowhenua County and not with the body he charges.- The dispute has nothing to do with the toll gates however, so it is no us i resurrecting a discussion that has been worn threadbare, but now wo know the toll gate is for " raising a part of the money required from those who cause the wear and tear."
