PUBLIC CORRESPONDENCE.
— — «. — ... . .,- The following correspondent* hag passed between the Mayor of and th* SJjHJrman of the Hofptftieima County Council 1~- .. Foxton, July 3rd, 1889. The Chairman Horowttenua County Council. • ,-—.■.. ft Hr-4 am requested by following resolution to being ander the notice of your Council the sabjeei of the proposed toll* Site upon the Wirokmo road, "Thatth* ttyor be requested to write to the Chair* man of the Horowhenua County Council, asking why It » their intention to erect a toll gate on the main V*A between Foston and Levin, and it the btjjeet they have in view would hot be effected by some other Btep lee« obstrtfetive'to the interests of this town and the country- districts the road runs through." You will see* that lam inBtructedto prpteit sgaitiat the erection of the proposed toll-gate in the interests of this town, and I am sure with the hearty wishes of both Maori and white settle^ in the Wiroldno Boad Board District. We would respectfully point out that it Would have been in accordance with tbO enterprising policy pursued by your Council and Wirokino Boad Board if you had in* vited ua to join in raising a loan to pUce a . bridge over the river rattier thaa to erect * , toll-gate to obstruct traffic. .Our main object in forming ourselves. : into a Borough was that we might co-oper-ate withyour County to our mutual advantage. ,We recognise that. the new township, of Levin must become a very considerable* commercial centre in your county, and thereal point of juncture for the public living; upon a very large portion tof the; coasfr. .-, .. We regret the delay in opening the/small portion of road between Heatherlea And . Levin, for had this road been made and a bridge in progress over the Manavratu river at Wirokino, we consider Levin wpiild , have been a far better site for a large '"■■_ Frozen Meat Company to have started than ' at the new proposed site at Longburn. I have much pleasure in forwarditlg this memo., in which I have tried to place some of the ideas and wishes that are spoken of both in and out of the Council, and that ( . your Council will not press this very obstructive and obsolete form of taxation upon this district. — I ha'vef /{He; bettor to remain, yours faithfully: ' . Jom* W. Goweb, ,
